This Connections Project Designer will report to the Lead Design Engineer and will work within Connections Projects LPN based in our London (near Canning Town) office. You will be a permanent employee.

You will attract a salary of £65,241, Inner London Allowance and a bonus of 3% This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote

If you do not have all relevant competencies for the core grade, it will be appropriate to appoint at a lower grade until you have developed the required competencies.

Working within a team of designers and reporting to a Lead Design Engineer, you will be required to produce designs, quotations and work packs for customer connections.

The Project Designer is guided by the Design Policy and the Connection Charging Manual, and is expected to meet all Electricity Guaranteed Standards and safety standards. Typically, quotations vary between £2k and £200k, but can be up to £1M and it would be expected that you will be competent to undertake this role autonomously.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Professional liaison with customers, their agents and internal stakeholders to gain the information required to complete a quotation.
  • Produce designs, quotations and work packs to agreed license condition and guaranteed standard timescales. This will include network analysis, reinforcement design and Netmap drawings.
  • Will assist in the development of junior members of the design team and will on occasion deputise for the LDE in their absence.
  • Consistent knowledge and application of the Design and Connection Charging Policies as well as relevant Codes of Practice.
  • Production of work packs satisfying all safety and delivery requirements.
  • Together with Network Operations colleagues, to ensure delivery of projects to financial targets and support project closure through financial reconciliation.

Essential Skills

  • The post-holder should demonstrate awareness of the design and operation of the electricity distribution network. For the post of Project Designer, the post-holder would need to be qualified to at least ONC level or equivalent.
  • The post-holder should possess the desire to give excellent service to customers to meet their needs.
  • Ability to plan, manage time and other resources
  • Must be able to show initiative whilst working as a team player, taking ownership and contributing to targets and supporting team success.
  • Be able to demonstrate intelligent balanced judgements in all matters
  • Enthusiastic & customer focus, without losing sight of safety and security of supply objectives.

Nature and Scope

The Connections Directorate designs and undertakes new and altered electricity connections within the UK Power Networks Licence area. All works are customer driven and the design team have to manage their time to meet customer expectations as well as comply with Licence Conditions, Guaranteed Standards and Safety Standards.

As the Project Designer you will liaise with customers, developing new connection designs that meet the customer requirements and produce quotations and work packs.

The role requires access to secondary substations to carry out surveys and installation of monitoring equipment.
