Job Purpose:


Join a highly professional and experienced Project Delivery team responsible for the safe timely and effective delivery of Major Projects for Services and its clients

This is a critical role to multi million pound projects.  The Planner is responsible for ensuring a fully cost loaded plan is built and maintained throughout the project.  They have to interpret any contract changes, variations in both monies and time to ensure the correct costs are loaded and we are protected contractually against liquidated damages.    


The Planner is responsible for mapping all claims and ensuring contact requirements are met in regards to notice periods and format of report. They must understand the work content to ensure it is correctly mapped. 


The job role holds significant importance as it effectively controls the project revenue as well as expenditure flagging early warnings and opportunities to improve productivity.   


The job holder shall provide a professional, first class, consistent and effective planning management service to our clients, including the use of performance indicators and project reporting systems in accordance with UKPNS processes and procedures. Act upon and discharge all Construction Design Management (CDM) obligations for projects as directed.


The Planner is to ensure that UKPN Services revenue from its major contracts are optimised and controlled in accordance with contract requirements. The individual will be responsible for building a cost loaded Primavera P6 programme, programming and project controls of design and build works and associated civils and cabling for projects in a safe & environmentally responsible manner. Ensure time, cost and quality, are met in accordance with the UK Power Networks Services Governance and all UK Power Networks Services and Client standards, current legislation and procedures.


Although based at the site stated in the title and principally working on the project in the title the candidate will be expected to work on any of the projects within UK Power Networks Services.


Principal Accountabilities:


  1. Production of Tender, contract, and detailed construction programmes
  2. Control project change, manage and track risks and contingency within the project life cycle, checking and confirming that appropriate approvals are sought before implementation
  3. Work with the Risk Manager and project teams to identify and incorporate risk mitigating actions into the planned work scope as well as appropriate time/cost contingency levels across the baseline schedules
  4. Provide advice on the schedule impact of proposed change and integrate approved changes into baseline updates
  5. Overseeing the progressing programmes, monitoring and reporting on project performance, highlighting deviations, providing early warnings and identifying and presenting project slippage recovery strategies
  6. Validate construction methodologies, resource and cost loading, activity durations, schedule logic, float allocation and critical path identification within submissions in support of UK Power Networks Services contract programme approval obligations.
  7. Maintain currency of programme plans and schedules at Level 4 and below where not assigned to a third party (supplier)
  8. Lead in the establishment of a safe working environment in the execution of managed work
  9. Ensure rigorous cost and project control measures are in place and manage change and risks within the project life cycle
  10. Ensure effective communication (validation and verification) of information and key issues to all within the project team and to the Client in a timely and appropriate manner
  11. Establish a good working relationship and collaborative approach with clients and stakeholders. Manage the delivery of Clients requirements in a safe and considered manner demonstrating value for money and a professional approach in all dealings
  12. Ensure effective liaison with Supply Chain Management with the Procurement Team
  13. Manage the identification of resources for the project to ensure optimal resource allocation
  14. Carry out all activities in compliance with UK Power Networks Services policies, procedures and current legislation and relevant Client requirements.
  15. Manage the establishment of the initial project baseline to provide effective measurement and control. The programme will encompass; project documentation; key deliverables; delivery strategy; resource requirements; outputs / measures; risks; dates and cost information.
  16. Provide accurate and timely programme data to meet Client and UK Power Networks Services reporting requirements supporting Earned Value Management reporting
  17. Lead/facilitate collaborative planning workshops and provide presentations, coaching and facilitation in the use of Primavera software
  18. Accurately identifying, controlling and forecasting the time scales and resource requirements of projects to minimise the likelihood of time overruns
  19. Work with, manage and provide support to colleagues in project teams. Co-ordinating the flow of information to ensure that interfaces within projects are effectively managed to optimise efficiencies
  20. Obtain buy-in to the schedule from project teams and co-ordinate schedule interfaces between the different control areas
  21. Work closely with the local finance team for monitoring project and sub-programme relevant information, P6 data integrity, income, expenditure, etc.
    Nature and Scope:
    The electrical systems element of Projects and Business Development is being broadened to meet Government and Customer requirements as well as new build policies on a national scale.
    This role requires applicants to have extensive experience of planning and optioneering within a project environment including construction experience and a proven background in planning management.
    The job holder will attend progress management meeting chaired by the Manager of Construction as required.


  • Extensive experience of construction planning
  • A good understanding and demonstrable experience of project delivery in the civils and electrical industry and multi-disciplined projects
  • Good working knowledge of a range of planning tools such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project and Microsoft Office packages (Project, PowerPoint, Access, Excel and Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with client, stakeholders, UK Power Networks Services project teams and sub-contractors
  • Detailed knowledge of safety regulations. (particularly CDM)
  • Team leader capable of motivating the team
  • Good commercial and financial understanding, thorough knowledge and experience of the change process under NEC3 form of contract and similar
  • Ability to develop from scratch a cost loaded programme to meet NEC 3 contract requirement
  • Good presentation skills
  • A good understanding of the commercial aspects of project control and the various forms of contract conditions
  • Confidently works with engineering and construction teams to develop detailed programmes for critical works
  • Extensive experience using Primavera P6 on complex construction programmes
  • Experience of maintaining programme performance baselines and their utilisation in generating earned value based report management
  • Management experience on Major Construction Projects
  • Excellent technical skills including problem solving and decision making
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to ensure effective communication to all levels to both internal and external personnel
  • Good oral, written and presentational skills with a particular aptitude for presentation of data for analysis and review
  • Interface with team to obtain information and commitment to formulating schedule whilst commanding respect from all stakeholders through technical and personal credibility
  • Engineering based degree or equivalent
  • Project management qualification such as APMP or Prince2 is desirable
  • Primavera P6 qualified experience
  • IOSH Managing safety
  • English and maths to a recognised standard

  • Demonstrable previous experience of construction planning management with extensive experience in Project / Construction management.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction methods and processes.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of design and build construction contracts including handover  and project close out
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of project and contract management
  • Ability to interpret project documentation and work on development, bid and delivery planning
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail
  • Experience in defining and producing planning reports and statistical analysis
  • To coach the operational project teams on planning elements of it’s works
  • Experience of working alongside the commercial team to provide accurate reporting of the project position using Earned Value Management
  • Highly numerate with ability to manipulate numerical information
