UK Power Networks

UK Power Networks is the country’s biggest electricity distributor, making sure the lights stay on for more than eight million homes and businesses across London, the South East and the East of England.

UK Power Networks continues to be listed in the Sunday Times’ Top 25 Best Big Companies to Work For, as well as the Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers, and made industry history by becoming first company to win Utility of the Year two years running (2015 and 2016, also 2012). The company is accredited in the Investors in People Platinum and Nation Equality Standard.

The company invests more than £600 million in its electricity networks every year, offers extra help to vulnerable customers at times of need, and is undertaking trials to ensure that electricity networks support the transition to a low carbon future. It also moves cables and connects new electricity supplies.

You will play a key role in the implementation of UKPN’s Digital Strategy by transforming the way the business utilises technology and data to improve business performance. The role will require innovation and ambition to achieve performance targets and maintain UKPN as the best performing electricity network operator and the Employer of Choice in the UK.

The Network Architect is responsible for designing and implementing the next generation enterprise class networking architectures that will support UKPN business critical digital systems and applications. Digital capabilities will allow UKPN to do what we do, only better, making our services more accessible, efficient, effective, and reliable.

As an expert Network Architect, you will transform UKPN from a legacy MPLS communications architecture to a cost-efficient future hybrid Software Defined WAN architecture able to support critical data communications across our regional offices, Electricity Substations, Control Centres, Contact Centres, mission critical Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) services, Telephony, and remote/home workers.

The role will bring deep skills in network cyber detection and response capabilities to enhance the UKPN network capability to rapidly detect cyber threats, alert the Security Operations Centre (SOC) and automate threat remediation. Without this role, the cost-effective delivery a next generation network will not be realised which would place the UKPN Digital Strategy in ED2 and realisation of business benefits from consolidation and transformation of communications networks at risk. This role will also enable the Information systems department to keep pace with business demand and changing expectations of IT.

  • Deliver UKPN’s next generation communication and telecommunications network based on modern technology to support UKPN’s Digital Strategy, migration to the Azure cloud, deliver ED2 initiatives and realise a commercially efficient secure network.
  • Successfully implement, administer, document, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices, including W/LAN, Proxy Servers, firewalls, routers, switches, load balancers, wireless access points, and controllers.
  • Execute network administrative tasks such as collecting statistics, monitoring performance, and deploying updates through a centralised real time dashboard.
  • Keeping continuously abreast of technology advances in networking and telecommunications, identifying how such capabilities can be utilised to drive digital innovation and continual improvement of the UKPN network infrastructure.
  • Conduct robust service management for mission critical applications, manage incident response, and coordinate with various technical and internal stakeholders. The role will manage troubleshooting and resolution of network-related issues throughout UKPN, while making sure to document and monitor network failures.
  • Perform hands-on support for a wide range of security technologies including, but not limited to: SEIM, IDS/IPS, HIDS, malware analysis and protection, content filtering, logical access controls, identity and access management, data loss prevention, content filtering technologies, application firewalls, vulnerability scanners, LDAP, forensics software, and security incident response.
  • Experience of leading, directing and managing large, geographically dispersed teams in a complex organisation, with the ability and gravitas to confidently challenge and influence decision making, structures and processes to lead an effective network function.
  • Being passionate about ‘how tech works’ and getting ‘hands-on’ to transform the UKPN data and telephony networks to prove business value and drive ‘learning through action’.

UK Power Networks is UK's largest electricity distribution network operator, delivering electricity to approximately 18 million customers, including critical infrastructure and businesses across the country.
