Role Summary:

 

  • The Learning and Development manager is responsible for the creation and delivery of all leadership training programmes and associated activities. Ultimately accountable for developing leaders to deliver our company vision in line with our values.
  • The success of the role will be judged on position holders ability to develop and enhance the talent and skills of managers across all levels within our organisation.
  • Creating training programmes aligned with the organisation’s objectives and priorities, embracing different styles of training techniques, including e-learning, tutorial sessions or coaching.

 

 

Principal Accountabilities:

 

As the learning and development manager, your responsibilities will involve:

 

  • Working closely with various leaders across the business to ensure a full understanding of their training requirements to deliver our Leadership Academy, our principal deliverable, delivering leadership development to 800 line managers.
  • Evolve and embed our work on Diversity and Inclusiveness, building on our NES accreditation to ensure re-accreditation in 2020 as well as demonstrating improvements against our 2018 benchmark in both the NES and in our position on the Inclusive Employers List.  
  • Work collaboratively with the Employee Engagement team to ensure the development of managers identified as needing support as a result of their annual employee engagement results through the Engaging Leaders Programme.
  • Review and continuously improve our performance management system to ensure that it is fit for purpose, intuitive and delivers sufficient quality data to assist the creation of an effective training needs analysis.
  • Work with IiP to deliver our action plan to ensure we maintain Gold status with elements of Platinum in 2020.
  • Co-ordinate all supported studies activity, ensuring a transparent and accurate process exists for the allocation of directorate budgets.
  • Review and enhance our on-boarding activity, including the modernisation of our Welcome Day programme.
  • Manage the process for the identification of Future Leaders and our Graduate intake to ensure we continue to recruit and develop the right skills, ensuring UK Power Networks are fit for the future. 

 

 

Skills required:

 

  • Be comfortable providing advice and input to key stakeholders across the company including senior leaders on a range of initiatives from a learning and development perspective.
  • An ability to carefully manage initiatives to derive maximum benefit from learning and development initiatives.
  • Management of budget to deliver stretch targets to ensure that the wider HR budget is achieved.  
  • Relationship builder, internally and also with 3rd party training providers to ensure best value for all externally sourced activity.
  • A strong leader with a track record of managing teams to deliver and achieve stretching targets in a performance based company culture.

Nature and Scope:

UK Power Networks is responsible for developing, delivering and managing safe and sustainable electricity distribution networks. We work in both regulated and unregulated markets. The vast majority of our employees work in the regulated business - the public electricity networks – working with our regulator Ofgem in a series of regulatory review periods.  A smaller proportion of the business takes on major commercial projects and contracting assignments ranging from supporting BAA at the major London airports to Powerlink, the private maintainer of much of the London Underground. As well as maintaining and sustaining the electricity networks within the region, the company takes on major infrastructure projects such as the London Olympic site for 2012.

 

The UK Power Networks HR team consists of three key functional areas: 

  • HR Services and Reward
  • Operational HR, Business Partners and Employee Relations
  • Communications, Engagement and Learning & Development

 

The role requires someone with a high level of credibility and with the ability to build long-term relationships at all levels of the organisation, working against tight deadlines, while being results driven and having an eye for detail.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • CIPD or equivalent
  • Previous success in the development and delivery of successful learning and development activity, ideally in a company with an operational workforce element.
  • Demonstrable experience of having developed, implemented and evaluated learning and development plans.
  • Ability to influence and persuade at all levels
  • Strong organisational and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an eye for accuracy and consistency
  • Results orientated, pro-active, enthusiastic approach and resilience under pressure
  • Energetic, strong team player with previous success in managing a team
  • Current valid driving licence
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Integrity and flexibility

 

 

 

 

Health & Safety Responsibilities

 

Managers and supervisors carry both legal and company responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of their employees, those under their control and those who might be affected by the work undertaken, i.e. public, visitors and employees of other organisations.
