This H&S Advisor will report to the Health and Safety Manager and will work within Operational Safety based in our in our any of our Eastern, London or Southern offices. This can include Bury St Edmunds, Borehamwood, Maidstone, Crawley, Ipswich or Central London. You will be a permanent employee.

You will attract a salary of £61,723 + car/allowance and a bonus of 3%.

Job Purpose:

As the Health Advisor you will give competent occupational Health & Safety advice to in business advisors, managers, staff, contractors and the general public to promote the requirements of the Health & Safety management system.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Provide Occupational Health & Safety advice to other advisers, managers, employees, contractors and the general public as required.
  • Work with the management team to implement realistic short/long-term objectives, advising on priorities as per the H & S Strategy and provide ongoing monitoring of performance
  • Monitor changes in legislation and acts on changes that may impact on the UK Power Networks business, considers changes that are required to policies and procedures and quantifies the impact these changes will have on UKPN
  • Monitors compliance with H & S policy, procedures and legal and moral obligations
  • Contribute to the review of existing and development of new procedures and processes and communicate relevant changes to those affected as produced by the Central H & S Team
  • Interpret our H & S procedures and monitor to ensure implementation and application within the directorates.
  • Is an active champion for H & S Stay Safe Culture change programmes, adopting a mentoring approach to H & S Culture change
  • Facilitate and undertake assessments of tools, equipment and PPE, working with suppliers, managers and staff to ensure compliance and suitability
  • Enhance our reputation regarding accident prevention through introduction of new company programs
  • Support the H & S incident investigation process by participating in investigations
  • Engage and consult with Union Safety Representatives and Non-Union Safety Representatives including participation at HESECs and Safety Action Teams and other relevant forums
  • Attend and participates in Stay Safe, Health, Safety & Environment Committee (HESEC), Risk Management H & S Forums or specific committees and Safety Action Teams where appropriate
  • Together with the Operational Assurance Team helps monitor compliance with safe systems of work and supporting the Worker Accreditation Scheme
  • Participate in and co-ordinates compliance audits of legislative requirements and/or new amended H & S procedures following Business Systems procedures and external auditors. Agrees and communicates actions required to rectify non conformances
  • Undertake regular random inspections/audits (Behavioural Exchanges) to monitor performance of field teams and identifies issues requiring improvements and good performance. Act as a mentor/coach to the business conducting inspections/audits and providing support
  • Assist with the developing of H & S training and communication materials relating to new procedures for implementation/communication to employees and contractors
  • Review method statements, providing guidance on H & S matters
  • Monitor workplace facilities to ensure they are aligned with company facilities management procedures
  • Monitor the provision and maintenance of vehicles and more general transport arrangements
  • Monitor application and compliance of CDM requirements and gives guidance to the business concerning the regulations.
  • Provide H & S reporting requirements to the management team
  • Carry out trend analysis on H & S statistics and provide reports
  • Provide a monitoring function to ensure that contractors are engaged and services provided exceed our expectations concerning H & S
  • Champion to employees, contractors and the public on ESQCR issues, consultation and actions

Nature and Scope:

You will be a member of the Operational Safety team and will work with management across UK Power Networks. You will report directly to the Health and Safety Manager.

You will have the necessary attributes to represent us at operational and senior management level with external stakeholders.

The post holder may be based from any of the locations listed, however will be expected to travel to all business sites and work locations as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Hold the National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate or is willing to work towards this qualification
  • Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Electronics & Electrical Engineering (previously ONC) or equivalent in relevant discipline.
  • Experience working or managing work on electricity distribution networks would be beneficial
  • Understand the Business H & S management system and Health, Safety and Environmental legislation relevant to Business activities.
  • Previous experience applying Construction, Design and Maintenance Regulations will be beneficial.
  • Experienced undertaking safety inspections or audits
  • Focussed on the principles of customer service, both to internal and external customers
  • Hold a valid UK driving licence
