This Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scanning Technician will report to the IM and CAD Manager and will work within UKPN Services based in our London, Elephant and Castle office. You will be a permanent employee.
You will attract a salary of £47,025, Inner London Allowance and a bonus of 3%.

Job Purpose
UK Power Networks Services has the ambition to be the leader in private power and energy infrastructure.
Working within our dedicated BIM, CAD and Information Management team, the jobholder is responsible for the application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scanning and delivering to client and project satisfaction. Within UKPN Services Team.
Ensure information consistency across all projects, rigorously, maintaining control and traceability of project scanned information.
Dimensions
As the GPR Scanning Technician you will oversee the survey requirements both Above and Below ground level, experience in subsurface investigations, geophysical data acquisition, and analysis dissemination of information obtained. You will ensure that information is accurate, accessible, and secure, supporting our strategic goals and compliance requirements. The GPR Scanning Technician helps the business to operate more effectively, make better decisions, and achieve its strategic goals.
Principal Accountabilities
Application and use of GPR initially including the interpretation of GPR survey information into a project report.
Roll out of GPR on our estate sites to work with site teams across the UKPN Services Business.
Ensure appropriate GPR and laser Survey methodologies are selected based on the project requirements and advising project teams on GPR and Lidar deliverables.
Collate a portfolio of information around the successful application of GPR and Lidar that will be used to further promote capability across UKPN Services Business and wider project teams.
Provide GPR survey and site finding (buried services) report to project teams within a following the GPR survey.
Utilise and produce Laser survey scans for Above ground services.
Import survey models into CAD formats then issue to CAD and project teams
Develop the GPR capability and look for opportunities to further the application of the GPR equipment.
Verify buried service information on-site and marking up of identified services
Record as-fitted detail using GPR equipment where applicable with Stakeholder Collaboration: Working with other departments to understand their information needs and provide solutions that enhance data accessibility and usability.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices in Surveying to help drive continuous improvement and innovation within UK Power Networks Services.
Collaboration and Communication: Enable information sharing across team members and departments, enhancing collaboration to ensure that all teams have the information they need.
Daily Responsibilities
- Underground surveys using GPR technology to locate and map buried objects such as utility lines, pipes, and other infrastructure.
- Operate GPR Equipment: Setting up, calibrating, and maintaining radar scanning devices.
- Surveying Sites: Conduct scans to detect underground utilities, voids, and anomalies.
- Data Interpretation: Analyse radar signals to create accurate underground maps.
- Reporting Findings: Preparing detailed reports and presenting results to engineers or clients.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all work follows UKPN health and safety guidelines and regulations.
- Collaboration: Work with surveyors, engineers, and construction teams.
Nature and Scope
The GPR Surveying Technician function within UKPN Services headed by the IM and CAD Manager.
UK Power Networks Services is the commercial business of UK Power Networks and focused on designing, building, operating, and maintaining safe, sustainable private electrical and multi-utility networks for owners of major infrastructure. You will support the business UK Power Networks Services, especially for the respect of Service analysis and BIM delivery.
Although the GPR Technician has no direct reports, they will report directly to the IM and CAD Manager, forming part of an established CAD, BIM and modelling team. You will maintain and enhance surveyed services, processes and supporting systems, for UKPN Services. You will be an important function within our business ensuring efficient collection of detail both below ground and above. Information provided both internally and externally with clients, supply-chain and important to the provision of accurate, reliable information.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Knowledge of surveying information and data management principles. Understanding and implementing data integrity and compliance.
- Utility Mapping specialist locating and mapping underground utilities for construction and infrastructure projects.
- Conduct subsurface investigations for buried service verification and assessments.
- Assist engineers in site investigations and ensuring safe excavation practices.
- Use GPR to assess ground conditions and detect potential hazards.
- Identify underground Services or geological features.
- Help locating buried services and anomalies without excavation.
- Information Security: Proficiency in information security practices and technologies. Knowledge of security measures to protect sensitive data.
- Mentor a small team to achieve project and departmental goals.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ensuring Information accuracy and consistency across all surveying functions and resolving data-related issues as well as generating insights and reports.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication skills for stakeholder and team collaboration.
- Experience using software and tools to handle information effectively
- Knowledge of engineering data management systems and the safe storage of survey information within defined CDE systems and collaborative platforms, these include, AutoDesk ACC, SharePoint and Bentley ProjectWise.
- User of, MicroStation or AutoDesk AutoCAD Platforms with the ability to create, manage update a project drawings to reflect surveyed information.
- Equivalent of HNC or HND qualification or equivalent as a minimum with experience of GPR scanning techniques.
- Courses Sygma Solutions GPR Training or EUSR Ground Penetrating Radar for Utility Applications provide industry-specific knowledge.
- Certifications CITB approved, TSA approved, EUSR accredited, and linked to ProQual Utility Mapping Qualifications.
- Practical Experience hands-on training in GPR theory, data collection, and post-processing.
- Standards Knowledge Understanding PAS128 Essential, HSG47, and CICES competencies is beneficial.
- CAT & Genny Training Course – safe operation, signal interpretation, and underground hazard avoidance.
- HSG47 Compliance understanding regulations for avoiding dangers from underground services.
- Practical Assessment – Demonstrating proficiency in locating buried services.
- Manufacturer-Specific Training: GPR equipment, Laser survey equipment and GPR training.
- Understand Electromagnetic Theory for understand and interpreting signals correctly
