This Flexibility Commercial Analyst position will report to the Flexibility Commercial Manager and will work within the DSO directorate based in our London office. You will be a permanent employee.

You will attract a salary of £51,539.00 and a bonus of 7.5%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote

Job Purpose:

You will be an important part of the Flexibility Markets Team within the Distribution System Operator (DSO). You will ensure that our flexibility programme is scalable, aligned with other markets, and delivering benefits to the network and its customers.

 

As more people opt for low-carbon, electric vehicles and heat pumps, demand on the electricity network is set to double. The Flexibility Markets team works with customers who can change their generation or consumption patterns to keep network costs down and speed up new connections.

 

We work with multiple flexibility providers, from start ups to large energy companies – encompassing flexibility from electric vehicles, batteries, generators, and demand response. We are viewed as a global leader in this space and have ambitious plans to scale up our use of flexibility and the impact it delivers on the net zero transition. We have committed to save over £400m in this way over the next five years.

 

To achieve this target and grow our flexibility market, you will:

  • Contribute to the development of our flexibility market, to make it easy for flexibility service providers to participate
  • Contribute to the development of our systems, to make the flexibility delivery process efficient when working with multiple flexibility providers in parallel.

 

Nature and Scope:

 

Smart electricity networks are the foundations to allow low-carbon technology like electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps, and renewable generation. In your role you'll be collaborating with some of the country's most talented low-carbon engineers and specialists at the heart of this once-in-a-generation transition, to help create the flexible, low-carbon energy system of the future.

 

This is a time of unprecedented change for the electricity industry as we move from the old world of large, carbon-intensive coal and gas-fired power plants to a much more complex, interconnected world of renewable energy, battery storage, and electric vehicles. Energy is one of the most important issues in the country right now, and this role will give you an incredible insight into the work to ensure sufficient grid capacity is available to enable the net zero transition across London, the East and South East of England, at a workplace consistently voted one of the UK's best big companies to work for.

 

Given UK Power Networks' pioneering ambition and use of local flexibility, you will be in a unique position to contribute to the development of commercial frameworks for local flexibility, influencing how flexibility is used to support the net zero transition in Britain and internationally.

 

You'll join the Flexibility Markets team - currently six experienced professionals with a range of skills in customer engagement, energy markets, data analytics and project management. You will work with colleagues who manage our procurement of flexibility and interact with flexibility providers day-to-day, to ensure that products are fit for purpose and we are listening and responding to market feedback.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

 

  • You will manage daily relationships with around 10 flexibility providers from start-ups to large energy suppliers, including through: Ensuring that their issues are dealt with effectively and use of their feedback to shape UK Power Networks' flexibility processes and products
  • Gather data from different sources on flexibility tenders, dispatch, delivery and partner surveys. Cleanse the data, format it, combine datasets and produce visualisation that produce actionable business insights
  • You will work with flexibility service providers and colleagues in the Flexibility Markets team, to develop an understanding of their challenges and potential solutions
  • Improve the design of our flexibility products and the functionalities of our systems to attract more flexibility participation and deliver excellent customer service
  • You will work with colleagues to ensure that flexibility services address emerging network capacity challenges and can be used within the control room
  • Collaborate externally with other electricity system operators to establish practical cross-industry approaches to flexibility that encompass our experience and understanding of issues.
  • Process, reporting and forecasting payments to flexibility providers of up to £1m pa

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in data analytics, electrical engineering, science or business
  • Experience in an analytical role with a customer focus

And/or:

  • A record in analysing data and generating important business insights, and the ability to transfer these skills to the electricity sector

 

 

  • Excellent numeracy and analytical skills, to interpret complex data and extract actionable insights
  • Highly competent with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Demonstrated experience working with customers and going the extra mile
  • 'Can do' attitude with a record of delivering outputs
  • Ability to understand complex concepts and communicate them in clear terms
  • Ability to articulate a problem and propose options to resolve it
  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently at all levels of the organisation and with external partners, both in oral and written form
  • Curious and eager to learn
  • Planning, organisation and time management skills
  • Experience of dashboarding tools such as PowerBI would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of low carbon technologies would be advantageous.
